Start by listening and identifying your industry influencers.

When you first start listening, you may feel that no one’s talking about your brand and there’s not much to listen for. This can ring especially true for B2B brands. That means it’s time to identify the primary influencers in your space. You can bet that trusted influencers are out there creating great content for just about every topic under the sun. So find the influencers first and see what they’retalking about.

Use analytics to help you work with a consistent strategy.

If we don’t listen to what our audience wants, we won’t be able to connect with them. We won’t be able to help or influence them. This rings true in our personal lives as well as in how we approach our audience on social and beyond.

All too often, we’re guessing, not listening. We’re making tactical moves, not strategic ones. Social media listening puts you in an enviable position: You’ll start sitting on a mountain of data. But more data doesn’t always create more action — you have to be intentional. So create consistent reports that cover:

1. Total mentions - such as brand health, industry insight, competitive analysis, campaign analysis and event monitoring.

2. Most active networks - this will vary by industry.

3. Sentiment analysis - the process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in a piece of text, especially in order to determine whether the writer's attitude towards a particular topic, product, etc. is positive, negative, or neutral.

4. Pain Points - this can include both a tactical and strategic focus.

To put it all into context for your internal goals this can be a dashboard for companies. “Are mentions going up or down overtime? ”and “Is positive sentiment increasing?”

Doing this on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis will help shape current and future campaigns and the way you talk to your customers.
